5/23/08: So what is so great about thin film solar cells? Actually, their benefits are hidden in their name. Thin film is flexible, light, and easy to work with. It can be shaped into shingles, for example, to look like a "normal roof". Thin film solar cells can also be worked with quite simply because they are so light. This is a huge improvement over previous solar cells which were large, heavy and required substantial substructures to install.

5/27/08: A new possibility for thin film solar is what are called "solar co-ops". This technology is advancing so fast, and these solar cells are so east to work with, that people can often use thin film for more than there own electricity needs. So imagine a neighborhood of ten houses, 5 of which have solar roofs. If enough electricity is being produced by the 5 roofs the neighborhood can form a co-op, where everyone pays in to the upkeep, installation costs, etc. of the thin film solar roofs. Then the entire neighborhood shares the electricity for free!

6/4/08: Thin film solar is rapidly becoming the solar technology of choice for residential and commercial buildings. In fact, solar has progressed to the point that people are actually replacing old solar roofs with new. So not only is thin film solar replacing conventional roofing, it is also replacing already green roofs!

6/20/08: Big news in thin film is that many major companies are buying in - not just solar energy companies, but big time manufacturers and energy companies. Thin film has opened the door to consumer solar on a grand scale.
